What is Shaolin boxing all about?
I mean like…. what kind of things do you do in that martial art? I’ve just heard about it and am curious. I’m looking on the net and i’m getting confused with things such as “shaolin” kung fu “shaolin” monks….etc
Are there weapons involved? Do you get belts like in karate, taekwondo? or is it just punching/kicking pads and sparring…!? (thats what i imagine what with the “boxing” being in the title… but i’m not sure)
1.) Shaolin is the name of a Buddhist monestary in China. Shaolin means ‘young forest’.
http://www.chinashaolintemple.com/
2.) Wudang is the name of a Taoist monestary in China.
http://www.damo-qigong.net/temple/wudang/kungfu.htm
Both Shaolin and Wudang are religious organizations and produce Buddhist monks and Taoist priests.
Both Shaolin and Wudang practice martial arts as a means of physical Fitness, self-defense, self-sufficiency, and as a means of dynamic or moving meditation (as opposed to sitting still in meditation). They are monks & priests first, and warriors last.
O.K. Shaolin Kung fu is a ‘complete system’ of self-defense. A complete system means it will train you in: weapons usage; empty hand combat; defense against single & mulitiple opponents; kata; pressure points; wrist locks and small joint manipulation. There is also some espionage tactics like wall scaling, handcuff escapes, how to tie up people, sneak into a castle, etc. etc. AND for a bonus, kung fu will also teach you how to cook, play chess (Chinese version), good hygenic habits, and philosophy. Everything it takes for you to become self-sufficient both mentally and physically.
Shaolin Kung fu wants you to become an ‘officer and a gentleman’ and not just a prize-fighting goon. In the Shaolin Temple anyone who just does kung fu and nothing else would be considered a little weird.

Taekwondo Defender of Kids $12.74 After attaining widespread popularity in the West over the past three decades, the Korean martial arts discipline Taekwondo has become as known for self-protection as it is for aerobic exercise. The home release Taekwondo Defense for Kids is grounded firmly in the belief that no age bracket is too young to master this discipline — and that the practice is in fact particularly desirable for children, for those viewers will be most susceptible to external threats from predators and the like. The program teaches young viewers the rapid-fire kicks and punches associated with the sport, specifically as they apply to safety and self-protection. The video is not geared to impart full Taekwondo mastery, but more useful in helping to teach kids a few simple, basic moves that will make them less vulnerable on the streets. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |
