Cider in its purest form is nothing more than apple juice with a little yeast added to allow it to start to ferment, and turn the natural sugar present in the apples into alcohol. The much rarer perry – which itself is now finding a new audience of drinkers – is made by the same simple process, but using pears instead of apples. And of course, there has always been a wide variety of ciders available, many of which can now be bought online to enjoy at home.

Adding fruit to beer has also been done for hundreds of years. Of course, the fruit is used in much smaller quantities, but continental brewers, in particular, have been adding cherries, raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants, peaches, and even bananas to beer for generations. And now the trend is spreading to the UK, with many of our smaller, more enterprising breweries experimenting with their own concoctions. Fruit beers can be cloudy, but more often, the fruit is filtered out and extra yeast added to clarify the liquid and make it more appealing to the eye. Flavoured gin, likewise, is a long-standing favourite, but here the link is more obvious, because gin itself is the product of fermented fruit – in this case junipers – along with other ingredients. Sloe berry, damson and plum flavours make especially tasty variants on the old ‘mother’s ruin’.

Also with a similarly long heritage is schnapps. Usually this is a clear, strong spirit, but variations with added fruit are especially popular in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Apples, apricots, pears, plums, raspberries and cherries have all been used to produce variants of schnapps. While the European version produces natural sugars from the fermenting fruit, the American version of schnapps has extra sugar added, which results in a much sweeter drink – for example, Archers bears little resemblance to German schnapps.

Another clear spirit has now become the latest to be subjected to attempts to broaden its a-peel (terrible pun!) – vodka. Many fruits have been blended with the spirit, such as blackcurrants, lemons, limes, apples and cherries. These may limit the drink’s alcoholic content, but they certainly add new dimensions of taste!
